Keeping Healthy as Spring Arrives
It’s March and the doldrums of winter are almost over. We’ve had a few warm days already and the early signs of spring are everywhere, encouraging us to get out and get some fresh air. As you return to the great outdoors, there are a few measures you can take to ensure that you stay safe and healthy.
- Protect yourself from the sun—Sunburn is one of the most common, yet debilitating, consequences of being outdoors, but it’s easy to avoid. Make certain you put on sunscreen with an SPF that will prevent a burn.
- Watch out for head injuries—Looking forward to your favorite outdoor sports—hiking, baseball, softball, tennis, soccer? Know the symptoms of a concussion or other traumatic brain injury. We all suffer bumps and blows to the head at some point in our lives. Be ready to take swift action to ward off any serious consequences.
- Be prepared for stinging and biting insects—Most insects are dormant in the winter and thrive in warmer temperatures. If you have allergies, be prepared with appropriate medication. If your child experiences any tightness in the chest, swelling of the tongue, dizziness, nausea or loss of consciousness after a sting, seek immediate medical attention.
- Make every ride a safe one—There’s nothing like getting on a bicycle on a balmy spring or summer day. Make certain you don a helmet and stay away from busy streets. Find the nearest bike paths, if possible. Stay on the right side of the road and keep your eyes open.
