Simple Precautions You Can Take that Will Help Keep You Cool and Injury-Free
2023 has been a scorcher, with Texas experiencing one of the worst heat waves on record…and it’s only the middle of July! Unfortunately, high heat can be both dangerous and deceiving. You may feel fine when you first go outdoors, but find yourself in distress in no time. Here are some of our recommendations for minimizing the risk of heat-related injuries over the next few months.
- Always apply sunscreen before you go outdoors, even if it’s overcast—When you suffer any level of sunburn, it limits your body’s natural ability to stay cool. Sunburn can also lead to dehydration. It’s best to apply your sunscreen at least a half an hour before you go outside.
- Always leave the windows open a crack in your car—The heat inside your car can elevate extremely fast, making it a common cause of heat stroke, both for humans and animals. You may have the AC on while you’re driving, but it won’t stay on when you turn off the car. If you stay in your vehicle for more than a few moments, you could be at risk.
- Make certain your house is well-insulated—It won’t do you much good to have air conditioning if you can’t keep the cool air in. Covering your windows with heavy material, such as blankets or drapes, can keep the heat of the sun from beating in on you.
- Take it easy—Even if you live an active lifestyle, your body may not react well to extreme heat. Be willing to take a week off from strenuous physical or recreational activity, or find a way to do it in the early or late hours of the day, when temps are lower. Of course, the best physical activity in a heat wave is a dip in the pool or the lake.
