Steps You Can Take to Protect Your Health and Well-Being
The summer of 2022 is going down as one of the hottest on record, with record temperatures being recorded throughout Texas and around the globe. Too much exposure to extreme heat can have devastating health consequences. Here are some things that you can do to stay safer this summer:
- Think before you do anything—Your normal routine may not be in your best interests this summer, especially if you live an active lifestyle. If you plan to go outside of the comfort of your home, think about all the ways you can potentially be affected by the heat. Make certain you have plenty of liquids to keep you hydrated and make certain you’re wearing clothes that allow your body to sweat and breathe. If you want to engage in strenuous activities, do them either early or late in the day, when temperatures are lower and you won’t be in full sun.
- When you are outside, take plenty of breaks—Expect that outside activities may take longer to complete. Look for some shade and go there every half hour or so. Drink plenty of cold fluids—there’s nothing better than water.
- Be able to recognize any symptoms of heat-related conditions—Know the signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Keep a close eye on yourself and others with whom you spend time outdoors. Immediately rest if you suspect any symptoms.
