Statistics in Texas Show Dangers of Driving While Impaired
Texas is a popular destination for Northern students seeking a respite from the cold weather during spring break. Unfortunately, where there are large numbers of college students, there tend to be large quantities of alcohol consumed. Many of those young people have little experience with alcohol and won’t understand the extent to which it will impair their mental and physical reflexes. Far too many will get behind the wheel of a car. As the statistics compiled by Texas law enforcement show, the results can be tragic.
According to data collected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were nearly 900 motor vehicle accidents in Texas during the 2021 spring break, leading to 107 serious injuries and 30 deaths. For the entire year, Texas saw 2,565 serious injuries suffered in DUI/DWI-related crashes, and 1,134 fatalities.
This year, TxDOT is working closely with U in the Driver Seat, an organization of college students, to promote awareness of the risks involved in drinking and driving, and to offer options that allow students to get around without driving while impaired. The “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign will include testimonials from students who have suffered loss because of a drunk driving accident and will provide students with options for commuting safely.
