Celebrate National Gratitude Month This Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving comes on the 4th Thursday every November, and we all take a day to reflect on the gifts we have received, of family, freedom and health. But why limit our gratitude to a single day? November is National Gratitude Month—let’s start every day by asking ourselves what we are grateful for.
The Power of Gratitude
Gratitude is just a way to feel good in the moment, right? It can give you a temporary respite from the stress, anxiety and trials of everyday life, a way to distract ourselves for a short period time. Wrong!
Studies have long shown that approaching life with a sense of gratitude has long-term benefits for both our physical and our mental well-being. Research conducted at the prestigious Harvard Medical School shows that people who intentionally focus on the things for which they are grateful live happier and healthier lives. Though the specific reasons may be uncertain, researchers say that living with a sense of gratitude generally leads to less stress. Stress has been clinically shown to have detrimental consequences for mental and physical health.
Give Greater Thanks This Thanksgiving
Why not start today? When you get up in the morning, ask yourself “What’s the one thing I am grateful for today?” Write it down on a piece of paper and carry it with you. When you hit a rough patch during the day, pull it out and remind yourself that you have much to be thankful for. Make Thanksgiving last the whole month this year…who knows, maybe you’ll make a permanent change, so that you live your entire life focused on all the things that make your life better. If you do, you can look forward to improved physical and mental health.
