Making Certain Your Kids Have a Happy Holiday
It’s almost Hallowe’en and your kids are looking forward to putting on a costume and bringing home a bag of sweets. There’ll be lots of kids out there, with many potential dangers. Here are some recommendations for making certain your children don’t get hurt when they are out trick-or-treating:
- Make certain their costumes don’t pose an unnecessary risk of injury—Masks are popular, but they can limit your child’s field of vision, causing them to trip on steps or a curb, or even walking out in front of a car. Also make certain the costumes are not too big—that’s another potential tripping hazard.
- Insist that they cross only at street corners or crosswalks—In the excitement of the moment, children can crisscross a road…that’s often dangerous. Also, make certain your kids use the sidewalks…crossing a lawn can lead to injury.
- Go with younger children—It’s generally a good idea to accompany children under the age of 10 as they go from door to door. When you’re with them, pay attention—don’t keep your focus on your phone or handheld device.
- Help make your children visible with reflective tape or stickers on their costumes, with glow sticks or with flashlights. Help them pick costumes in lighter colors, so that they can more easily be seen by others.
