Take All Your Injuries Seriously and Maximize Your Health and Well-Being
It’s a cultural thing in the United States—we want to be perceived as tough, as strong, as indestructible. For that reason, when something happens to cause us injury, we have a tendency to try to shake it off. When that something that happened to us was a motor vehicle accident, that can be a mistake.
In the aftermath of any type of mishap or collision involving a car, truck, motorcycle or mass transit vehicle, you want to seek full and immediate medical attention. Some of your injuries will be obvious—a broken bone, cuts and bruises, perhaps. But many of the most debilitating injuries may not be readily apparent. For example, you may sprain or strain muscles in your neck, shoulders or back, but feel nothing unusual for days or even weeks. Those injuries, though, can cause the most discomfort and negatively affect you for the longest period of time. If you have any stiffness, tingling, numbness or heat in a joint or other part of your body, you want to see an experienced medical professional as soon as possible.
In the hours, days and weeks following a car accident, you want to continually monitor your body for anything that seems out of the ordinary. Are you having a more difficult time standing for any length of time? Is it harder to get a good night’s sleep? Do you occasionally have vertigo, instability or balance issues? Anything that feels different can be a sign of an underlying injury.
