Celebrating the Holidays Safely During the Pandemic
It’s the winter holiday season, traditionally a time for family, friends, and others to gather and share the joy of the season. But with the coronavirus pandemic resurging across the country and around the world, those gatherings can put you and your loved ones at risk. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) offers recommendations for spreading the goodwill of the holiday season while minimizing the risk of spreading the virus.
The safest way to get through the holiday season is to limit or avoid in-person gatherings. Schedule a Zoom or FaceTime holiday party or event. Send presents early and open them together on a videoconference. It’s not quite the same as being there in person, but there are advantages—you won’t have to travel in inclement weather; you won’t have to worry about having a little Christmas cheer; and you won’t put yourself and others at risk.
If you plan to attend an event or gathering, stay home if you show any symptoms of COVID-19. If you do go, talk to the host or organizer beforehand to ensure that proper precautions are being taken. Avoid travel outside of your community and give priority to outdoor events. Make certain to wear an appropriate mask and carry extra hand sanitizer with you.
If you plan to host an event, first determine how many people can be present and still maintain social distancing. Arrange seating so that guests will be six feet apart. Let your guests enter on their own and direct them to safe and socially-distanced seating.
