Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area has a population of 6.8 million, which is the 7th largest metro area in the United States. The Houston Chronicle published an investigation that mapped all 601,187 fatal roadway accidents in the country from 2001 through 2016. It found more vehicle-related fatalities in Houston than any other city. Dallas trailed at No. 2.

In Dallas alone, there were 38,823 car accidents in 2016. These involved 81,022 vehicles and 103,388 people. In total, Dallas’ car accidents accounted for around 16.25% of the state’s total accidents. 2016 was also the worst year so far for car accidents. From 2010 through 2016, each year saw an average of 1,872 more accidents than the previous year. In 2016, there were 4,548 more accidents than in 2015, and 11,230 more crashes than in 2010.
Dallas averaged 30,935 accidents per year from 2010 to 2016. This can be reduced to 84.75 accidents per day, 3.53 accidents per hour, or about one accident nearly every 17 minutes.
Looking at the number of accidents, scaled for population, it is clear that Dallas has more accidents. For every 100,000 people, there are an average of 1,988 accidents in Texas as a whole and 2,451 in Dallas. Over the course of a year, residents of Dallas have approximately a 6.56% chance of being involved in a car accident – slightly above the 5.27% chance that that most Texans face.
