The Telltale Symptoms of Whiplash
You’ve been in a car accident, had a work accident or were hurt in a slip and fall. You may have some stiffness in your neck, but have you suffered a whiplash injury? It’s one of the most common types of injuries, but it’s treatable. Let’s look at what a whiplash injury is and how to tell if you’ve suffered one.
What Is a Whiplash Injury?
Just as the name suggests, a whiplash injury occurs when your head and neck snap violently back and forth, much like the crack of a whip. Whiplash is most commonly caused by a motor vehicle accident, where the force of impact throws your head forward and back. The violent snapping back and forth can cause injury to bones, muscles, ligaments, nerves and other tissue in the neck and shoulders. Most people who suffer some type of whiplash will return to full health, without any chronic pain or discomfort, but in severe cases, the consequences can remain for months or years.
How Do You Know If You Have Suffered a Whiplash Injury?
If your head has been jerked back and forth in any type of accident, regardless of the degree of force, chances are good you have whiplash. The specific symptoms of a whiplash injury include:
- Stiffness throughout your head, neck and shoulders, or difficulty turning your head from side to side or up and down
- Aching or pain in your neck and shoulders
- Interference with your sleep pattern, either from pain or general restlessness
- Vision problems, including loss of focus or blurred vision
