Headache Pain May Be a Sign of a More Serious Injury
One of the most common ailments after a motor vehicle accident is a headache. Unfortunately, many people ignore or downplay headaches after a car wreck, choosing instead to focus on cuts, bruises, broken bones or soft-tissue injury. But persistent headaches can be symptoms of more serious, and even life-threatening injury.
Headaches May Be an Indication that You’ve Suffered Whiplash
Though a headache may simply stem from a bump to the head, it can also be the result of a whiplash injury. With whiplash, there’s typically no direct contact between your head and any stationary object. Instead, the sudden impact of a car accident can cause your head to snap violently back and forth, with your brain bouncing off the inside of your skull. That can lead to bruising or internal bleeding in your brain, which can in turn cause inflammation or swelling (which may potentially limit the flow of oxygen to various parts of your brain).
Headaches May Be a Sign of Concussion or More Serious Traumatic Brain Injury
Many of the symptoms of a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI) can take days or even weeks to appear. One of the more telling signs of a TBI is persistent head pain. Other symptoms include dizziness or disorientation, extreme sensitivity to light or sound, memory problems, nausea and/or vomiting.
