Common Causes of Head Pain and Soreness After a Motor Vehicle Accident
A common complaint, after a motor vehicle wreck, is head and neck pain, though most headaches take a few days to become troublesome. Head injuries are, however, one of the most frequent injuries arising out of an auto accident. Let’s look at some of the causes:
- Whiplash – A full third of all people injured in car accidents are treated for whiplash, typically caused when your neck and head snap violently back and forth after impact with another vehicle. Whiplash often causes sprains to the cervical ligaments, located at the base of your skull. These sprains lead to tightening of the muscles in the neck and head, which can manifest as a headache. Whiplash can also cause swelling in your brain, which can lead to pressure or tension headaches as your brain pushes out against your skull.
- Concussions – Concussions—A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury, typically viewed as minor to medium in its severity, but always a cause for concern. Concussions may result from impact with another object, such as the dashboard, steering wheel, or windshield, or may be a consequence of whiplash.
- Stress – It’s well-known that stress can contribute to or cause both tension headaches and migraine headaches. In the aftermath of a motor vehicle accident, when there’s much uncertainty about your future, you can experience a level of stress sufficient to result in headaches.
Spinal adjustments and chiropractic treatments focused on the neck can reduce inflammation and swelling, alleviating the symptoms of whiplash or concussions.
